"A Night to Remember"
When you take an award named for a man who has done so much to make
Dallas a better city, and present that award each year to someone
else who does likewise, you soon find yourself surrounded by
exceptional people, who bring out more exceptional people and you
end up with a most special event you won't soon forget. Such was the
case last Friday at the Westin Galleria Hotel when more than
700-people
gathered for the presentation of the third-annual Robert S. Folsom
Leadership Award by Methodist Hospitals of Dallas.
Most people are aware of Troy Aikman's many successes and awards
pertaining to his prowess on the football field for the Dallas
Cowboys. The winningest quarterback of ANY decade in the history of
the National Football League! 94 regular-season victories in the
decade of the '90s, plus three Super Bowl victories in four- years
of the same decade. And the first person chosen in the 1989 draft
was chosen MVP in Super Bowl XXVII. Aikman holds, or is tied for,
forty-seven Cowboy passing records. He is a member of the Cowboy
Ring of Honor, the NFL Hall of Fame, and was named to the Pro-Bowl
six-times during his eleven seasons with Dallas.
What you may not know is while Troy Aikman's outstanding leadership
was re-writing record books ON the football field, his leadership
OFF the field was growing too!
In 1992, he established the Troy Aikman Foundation to help with his
mission of helping disadvantaged children. His Foundation helps with
the costs and educational needs for these children. He is currently
involved in establishing Aikman End Zone playrooms in children's
hospitals across the nation. His first such facility was installed
at Children's Medical Center in Dallas.
The Aikman Foundation also supports many other worthwhile causes
such as American Cancer Society, Oklahoma Red Cross, United Way. For
all these causes and for his continued passion and leadership for
children, Troy Aikman was chosen to receive the 2007 Robert S.
Folsom Award.
In addition to video-tributes from many close associates, including
Roger Staubach, Dan Marino, James Brown, Norv Turner, Jerry Jones,
Joe Avezzano, Babe Laufenberg, Mike Doocy, and several others,
Aikman's co-host of NFL football on the Fox-TV network, Joe Buck,
made a surprise appearance and served as Emcee. His in-depth
knowledge of Aikman was obvious and his professionalism was seldom
matched...UNTIL Aikman moved to the podium to accept the prestigious
Folsom Award. He had little need for notes, touched every base that
has been meaningful to his life including his wife Rhonda and his
three daughters Rachel, Jordan and Alexa.
Last year's winner, Nancy Hunt, with husband Ray Hunt, and Margaret
Folsom, wife of Robert S. Folsom, winner of the first award, were
also among the Dallas elite attending the affair. Steve Wariner
was the featured vocalist of the evening.
Methodist Hospitals of Dallas announced that the event honoring Troy
Aikman netted one-million-dollars which will be used to establish a
Neo-Natal-Intensive-Care Unit at Methodist Hospital of Dallas.
The financial success truly made it A NIGHT TO REMEMBER!
Thank you Troy Aikman for exhibiting once again that you ARE
special!
