"Democrats Dominate"
Americans voted Tuesday
and it should not have been much of a surprise, their feelings
regarding the war in Iraq played a huge role in how they cast their
ballots.
Democrats stormed to overwhelming control of the House of
Representatives and at this writing have control of 50-seats in the
Senate with that number possibly climbing to 51 when the final
decision is reached in Virginia.
President Bush held an
hour-long news conference today (Wednesday), and acknowledged his
Republican party took a "thumpin'" yesterday. He also answered
question after question mentioning his desire to work with the new
Democrat-controlled House, and probably the Senate too, in a
bi-partisan manner that best serves the country.
Mr. Bush may have removed one of the Democrats irritants when he
announced that Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld would be
stepping down and that he had nominated Robert Gates, the President
of Texas A and M University and former CIA Director, to replace
Rumsfeld at the Pentagon.
President Bush said he had telephoned Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the
California Democrat who will become Speaker of the House in January,
and congratulated her and set up a meeting for later this week with
the Speaker -to-be. It was Rep. Pelosi who told television viewers
last evening that the "Democrats are ready to lead in a new
direction!"
That statement was heard over and over again from Democratic
campaigners before yesterday's voting. Now that they have won, the
Democrats may find providing "new direction" in some areas difficult
to achieve.
Cases in point: The Economy is good!
The Dow Jones is at an
all-time high, a new direction there would mean what?
Unemployment has never
been lower in more than two-decades, new direction there would be
quite a challenge.
Taxes are lower; oil
prices are coming down; Federal tax revenues are near the all-time
high; Inflation is near a twenty-year low; and there has not been a
single terrorist attack on U.S. soil since 9/11/01.
What new direction from
these success stories will the Democrats use?
Without a doubt. the Democrats new-found power will try to focus on
the subject that changed most peoples's vote from RED to BLUE in
yesterday's Congressional races. IRAQ! How quickly will they bring
U.S. forces home? Can they reduce our presence there without it
looking like a U.S. defeat? Do they have plans at the ready that
will "move America in a new positive direction?"
President Bush will not spend his final two-years at 1600
Pennsylvania Avenue just "twiddling his thumbs!" A change in the
Secretary of Defense may just be the first of several changes he
makes as he continues to do as he said in his press conference
today: "work for what I feel every American wants and that is what's
best for America!"
Kickoff for this new Washington game will be in January. That's
about the time we can expect an increase in campaigning for the next
big political plum--the 2008 Presidential race!
Let the games begin!
