 "Katie's Back, Legs and All!

An hour ago I watched Katie Couric's first day as lead anchor of CBS-TV News at the dinner hour. New set, big EXCLUSIVE lead story from a Taliban headquarters in the middle east and if anyone had wondered if Ms. Couric's gorgeous gams would be featured as they were during her Today Show days, the answer is a resounding yes.

Early in the newscast, Ms. Couric interviewed a reporter from the New York Times from a spot away from the anchor desk and it was just like Today Show days, Katie's crossed legs, short skirt and questions for a liberal New York Times reporter.

We don't mean that will always be the dominant tone of the new CBS effort. They did offer a feature called "Free-Speech" where people with differing viewpoints would be heard. Of course the entertainment news will apparently be a daily part of the program if today's kickoff program can be used as a gauge. Something called "Snap-Shots" featured "first" photos of Tom Cruise's new baby.

Give Katie Couric credit for effort. She smiled often and dressed stylishly even though her make-up seemed to make her appear "harder" on camera. We wonder if a softer look would not be more beneficial for Ms. Couric and could be accomplished with a "softer--warmer" makeup job.

Only Katie Couric knows how tense she was in this first program and perhaps tomorrow, and as the days go by,she will loosen up a bit more and be as comfortable as she was for such a long time on the Today Show.

Tomorrow, she says she is going to do an exclusive interview with President Bush. Will she be reaching for hard, in-your-face questions? We will be watching as I am sure many of you will. Even if you are not a Bush fan or a Couric fan, who wants to miss a check of how many gorgeous gam shots of Katie's crossed legs they use! It's the new look at the dinner-hour news. A look much closer to MTV-thinking than Bob Schieffer thinking!

We'll keep you informed, and who knows--those leg shots may allow her to dance UP in the ratings and stay around a lot longer than some believe possible.

Good luck Katie!
