"Will T.O. Ride Bicycle Or Tricycle?"
The National Football League starts
playing REAL games week after next. What a relief. There surely will
be other lead stories about the season and the competing teams that
will remove the steady diet of T.O. riding a bicycle! T.O.
over-sleeping! T.O. missing a team meeting T.O. missing a rehab
assignment! !What does Parcells think of T.O.? What does Jerry Jones
think of T.O.?
As we write this, T.O. --as in Terrell Owens--, has not played
one-down in a pre-season game for the Dallas Cowboys. Will he play
in the Cowboy's first game against Jacksonville on September 10th? I
would not bet on it.
After his mounting discretions of the last several days brought a
$9,500-fine from the Cowboys, T.O. moved into that other
definition of T.O. (Terribly Obnoxious) to say: "It's not the first
time and probably won't be the last time. I'm not perfect by any
means....I will try to make more of an effort--a better effort--to
get there on time!" He never mentioned if he owned or knew how to
operate an alarm clock. He did say: "These type of things happen.
Even going through high school you're tardy sometimes!" This is not
high school.
While T.O. always finds his hamstring "loose" enough to talk to the
eager press, Parcells probably would like to see T. O.'s mouth
become more like his hamstring--tighten- up a little bit. That's a
lot to expect from a player from yesterday who may be worth more
money because he yelps so much about everything and backs up his
words seemingly only when he is ready to do so on his own schedule..
Parcells, who runs a tight ship--on his own terms--seems to be
getting fed up with the steady barrage of T.O. questions in his
daily news conferences. Parcells has said all along that if Owens
does not practice he will not play. But reporters keep asking, will
he play--every day they ask and now Parcells says, "How could you?"
Now while Owens is inundated by reporters question, and Parcells
faces the same questions every day--the third part of this very
visible equation, Jerry Jones, is selling. Jerry is always selling.
That;s how he got enough money to buy the Dallas Cowboys--selling.
Jerry reminds me of what Howard Cosell used to tell me when he was
doing sports on my news program on WABC-TV in New York. Howard said:
"Never worry about what they say about you, just make sure they
spell your name correctly!"
Sure Jerry Jones is obligated to ten-million dollars for Owens this
season. And sure, Tony Kornheiser, the non-entity in the ESPN Monday
Night Football booth this season, can keep asking Jones the same
question over and over trying to trip him up and get him to say
Jones and Parcells were not on the same page in securing Owen's
services, it did not work on Jones. Jerry Jones is a salesman and a
risk-taker.
Jerry Jones doesn't care if Terrell Owens is riding a bicycle or a
tricycle on the sidelines now. But you can rest assured when Owens
Hammy loosens up and he catches his first touchdown pass of the
season...Jones will watch Cowboy fans by the thousands cheer and
shout ..."way to go T.O.!" As they wander deep down:
"Can it last? How long before an explosion similar to those
previously heard in San Francisco and Philadelphia?" Parcells and
Owens--maybe the first successful oil and water mixture in modern
NFL history! Wouldn't that be nice? If that happens, Jerry Jones
will have the biggest smile in the stadium---or maybe the second
biggest! That T.O. now when HE smiles--that's a BIG smile!
