 "Couric News Carousel Approaching"

It seems it was just yesterday they were saying Bon Voyage to Katie Couric on her final NBC Today Show. Playing all those carefully chosen tapes as Kevin McCarthy, my longtime radio pal from Dallas said: " Liberal to the last drop--Couric's goodbye spotlights bricks for the GOP and Bouquets for Dems!"

Amongst the bricks for the non-Democrats was the tape of Couric's question from the archives for Ross Perot: "Some people are left with the impression that you are vindictive, that you're ruthless, a sore loser, and they don't feel comfortable with that?" No tape of Perot's answer. Then this little ambush using an old Bob Dole interview when Charming Katie said: "Some people think from your comments you have made of late that you are being an apologist for the tobacco industry, that somehow they have you in their pocket." Again no Dole answer. A question for Patrick Buchanan: "Is this a big ego trip for you?" His answer not used. And Curious Katie with a slingshot while trying to put pro-choice First-Lady Laura Bush on the spot: "Do you believe the women in this country should have the right to an abortion?" And in still another special tape blast at non-Democrats, Ms. Couric said to Dan Quayle, presumably on the eve of his VP debate with Al Gore: "Some people think Al Gore is going to eat you alive in the debate." Note how she used "some people " say or "some people" think this or that. Is this not a cover for Couric's own personal thoughts rather than her actually quoting what someone else said?

In just a couple of weeks Katie Couric is going to slide into the seat some other excellent journalists have filled with great professionalism and straight-forward reporting.

Among those Walter Cronkite and lately Bob Schieffer who picked up the pieces left behind by a tentative Dan Rather and brought CBS back onto contention for the dinner-hour ratings. Cronkite was a Democrat but we never knew it from his reporting. I don't know what my friend Schieffer is politically and that is the way a good anchor person should be. When a newscast ends, the viewer should feel they got all the facts, nothing slanted in any Political direction by the anchor person reporting.

Katie Couric after a recent whirlwind tour of America was quoted in the Houston Chronicle as saying: "The biggest challenge I will have is to improve the newscast that is already good....I hope to continue the connection I have had with some viewers (on the Today Show).

By the Fall Ratings sweeps we should be knowing if America has bought into the former free-swinging liberal hostess of the entertainment loaded Today Show.

She could be made to be more acceptable if they found time more than once a week for a Bob Schieffer spot ...or two.....or three. I know Bob Schieffer and Katie Couric is NO Bob Schieffer!
