 "Bush Unveils Plans"

This column is being written Wednesday afternoon before President Bush addresses the nation from the Naval Academy. We do not profess to know what his exact words will be in that speech, nor should we, but chances are above average Mr. Bush will include tightening our borders with Mexico and what we will do next in Iraq as two of his subjects.

The President spent the early part of this week traveling along the border of Mexico in Arizona and Texas. With more determination than he has seemingly shown in the past, Mr. Bush said: "We have a responsibility to enforce our border!" And he said: "We've got to treat people with respect and dignity." Then, he once again repeated his plan that includes a guest-worker option. He said: ""When you match willing worker with willing employer on a job Americans won't do, with a tamper-proof card that says I'm here legally for a temporary basis, it means our Border Patrol Agents won't have to chase people coming here illegally to work. They'll be able to chase criminals and drug traffickers and crooks." He also said there will be no amnesty for illegal immigrants now holding jobs in America. He vowed to crack down on employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants.

As the president goes about trying to sell his concerns for border violators, we ran across some numbers this week that come into play while Congress and the president try to arrive at legislation they can agree upon. There were 160,000 apprehensions of other- than-Mexican illegal-crossers in 2005. That was 219% increase over 2004.

Also, 29% of the 36-million immigrants to America are here illegally! And 155,000 illegal immigrants were arrested in the interior or by fugitive units, and 460 people are known to have died in the desert after crossing our borders with Mexico illegally in fiscal 2005. All these figures were gathered by the Dallas Morning News from Homeland Security, Department of Justice and the Pew Hispanic Center.

While the president will probably mention his concerns about our leaky borders with Mexico tonight, he is expected to devote considerably more time to Iraq and the possibility of withdrawal of some U.S. forces .

Mr. Bush probably will explain what it means for Iraqi Security forces to be "Level 1" versus "Level 2" ready. And much of that involves logistics support such as food, maintenance and payroll system.

In a 35-page "National Strategy for Iraq" released by the White House this morning, the document characterized "the enemy" as a diffused and sophisticated combination of "rejectionists, Saddamists, and terrorists affiliated with or inspired by Al Qaida." It went on to say: "No war has ever been won on a timetable and neither will this one."

The White House document further declared: "we expect, but cannot guarantee, a draw-down over the next year." Adding emphatically: "While our military presence may become less visible, it will remain lethal and decisive, able to confront the enemy wherever it may organize."

While President Bush's approval numbers are below 30%, his resolve to stay the course seems more indelible. He has never wavered from a thought paramount in his mind---to cut and run would send a message to the terrorists around the world---America no longer will stay the course. This Commander-In-Chief vows to stay the course regardless of approval ratings.

Removing illegal aliens from American soil and tightening the border with Mexico cannot bring back the victims of 9/11. It definitely would reduce the open arms policy that now allows illegals from all over the world to make America their operations headquarters ---- by way of the Mexican border!
