 "They Led the Way"

It will be a night filled with memories that touched all our lives. A night for the ages---ALL ages! It will be awards night November 5, 2005 at the Dallas/Addison Marriott Quorum by the Galleria. This year's Texas Radio Hall of Fame Induction Celebration Awards dinner will spotlight National, Regional and Local names we all grew up with, names like George Carlin, Sam Donaldson, Hugh Lampman, Wes Wise, Ken Knox, Ann Arnold, Milo Hamilton, Vann Kennedy and many others.

Not all of those honored go back as far as some of us who started in radio even BEFORE WIRE recorders came into being. But you can be sure all of those being honored at this year's event played significant roles in the history of radio and have earned the recognition they will receive.

Some may have forgotten that before George Carlin was a successful comedian at KXOL in Fort Worth and, prior to that, just across the river in Shreveport. Maybe people did not know that before Sam Donaldson refused to do a television news story unless he was wearing a red tie, he had been on radio in El Paso and Dallas.

Who can forget that before Wes Wise was elected Mayor of Dallas he had worked on the Liberty Radio Network with the Old Scotchman Gordon McLendon and later with numerous radio and television outlets in the southwest.

How many remember that Ann Arnold, today's Executive Secretary of the Texas Association of Broadcasters was the FIRST female press secretary to a Texas Governor?

How many of you know that Vann Kennedy (deceased) the former owner of various Texas radio stations also gave Walter Cronkite his start in journalism?

These and many more great broadcast stories will be heard Saturday night November 5th at the Dallas/Addison Marriott Quorum. We do hope you are there to share a special evening honoring many people who have earned their own special spotlight in radio's world.

BEST E-MAILS OF THE WEEK:

(Hurricane Wrap) Regardless of what the Prince of Poverty Jesse Jackson wants you to believe, the US Government didn't create the hurricane as a way to eradicate black people of New Orleans. Nor did Russia as a way to destroy America, And the US Government didn't cause global warming that caused the hurricane. (We've been coming out of the Ice Age for over a million years.)

The government isn't responsible for giving you anything. This is the land of the free and the home of th brave, but you gotta work for what you want. McDonalds and Wal-Mart are always hiring. Get a job and stop spooning off the people who are actually working for a living. President Kennedy said it best...."Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country!"
