Murphy Martin Commentary
December 27, 2007
"6 AM to Midnight"
Christmas has come and gone. Santa has made his rounds, families
have gathered again, tons of food have been consumed, telephone
lines have been jammed with greetings and on Christmas day the local
newspaper was wrapped in the usual plastic bag on which was printed
in very large type...OPEN 6 A.M. To MIDNIGHT! Merchants used that
phrase seemingly much more often this season as commercialization of
Christ's birthday grew more rampant than ever. We couldn't help but
wonder, as we move into 2008, how much more will our world change in
the next twelve months?
Will Hillary become the first woman president of these United
States? Will Obama become the first Afro-American to gain a spot on
a presidential ticket?
Will we still have more than a hundred- thousand troops fighting a
war in Iraq? Will Iran become an active participant in Middle East
fighting? Will America move in there as they have in Iraq?
Will the Democrats maintain control of Congress?
What will be done about education in America? How will the Economy
fair in 2008?
What, if anything, will happen to control the spiraling costs of
health care in America?
Will there be medical discoveries, such as a cure for cancer? Ways
to save eye-sight from the ravages of macular degeneration? Could
Americans begin to take better care of their bodies? Stop smoking,
adhere to a healthier diet? Exercise more?
The coming year may also provide answers to carryover questions from
2007 such as:
Will television programming take a hard look at itself? Will sex and
profanity continue to be interwoven with entertainment as well as
commercials? Why are commercials for Viagra and Cialis necessary to
be shown on television?
Does the Federal Communications watch the same programming the
general public sees? If so, do they ever question the startling
growth of tasteless content we now see at all hours?
Will we ever again see news-anchors who just report the facts of a
story without interjecting their personal opinions all too often?
Can we live long enough to listen to an interview with athletes who
can answer questions without saying "you know" 25-times in
three-minutes?
Will NFL pass a rule banning the wearing of diamond ear studs during
a game? Will Major League Baseball overlook those who have used
steroids to enhance their bodies?
Will the Dallas Cowboys make it to the Super Bowl next month? What
female performer will be blamed for the next Tony Romo loss?
You probably have dozens of questions we have not mentioned. But,
there is a final question most all of us will ask: How long can we
stay with our New Year's Resolution? That will take 6 A.M. TO
MIDNIGHT dedication!
Here's hoping we can keep those resolutions and that you enjoy a
Happy and Healthy New Year. And may our country do likewise!
That's my time, thank you for yours
