 "Standing Tall"

We sometimes take them for granted--those dedicated men and women in blue. But during recent days when they were called out in additional numbers throughout the south in the wake of those wicked ladies named Katrina and Rita, asked to pull double shifts--to rescue those who were trapped and facing death--try to halt looters who seized new opportunities to become bigger scum-bags while the world was crumbling---yes as I looked at picture after picture and story after story about their dedicated work---I REMEMBERED how much we take police officers for granted.

Police officers are those nameless creatures who are called sir or m'am to their face and the fuzz behind their backs! They must be such diplomats that they can settle differences between individuals so that each will think he won.

However, if a law enforcement officer is neat, they are conceited, if they are careless they are bums. If they are pleasant they are called flirts, if they are not they are called A GROUCH.

They must make instant decisions that would take an attorney months to make. If they hurry they are called careless, if they are deliberate they are lazy.

They must be able to stop bleeding, tie splints, and make sure the victim goes home without a limp or they may be sued in court. The law enforcement officer must know every gun, draw on the run and hit where it doesn't hurt.

They must be able to whip two men twice their size and half their age without being brutal. They must know everything and not tell.

They must know where all the sin is but not partake.

Police officers must from a single strand of hair be able to describe the crime, the weapon, and the criminal...and tell you where the wanted person is hiding. But if they catch the wanted man some will call them lucky, and if they don't they will be called a dunce!

If officers get promoted some will say it is because of political pull.

Yes, law enforcement officers must be all things to all people. They must be a minister, a social worker, a diplomat, a tough person---and a lady or a gentleman....AND....they must be part genius, because they will have to feed their families on the salary of a law enforcement officer!
