"Up Close and
Personal"
There are many subjects to write
about this week.
The Jerk leader of Iran was soundly
booed and hissed during his speech at Columbia University in New
York (way to go Columbia); Hillary is still working overtime trying
her efforts to move the Hillary and Bill show back into 1600
Pennsylvania Avenue in January of 2009; and, the Dallas Cowboys look
like the best of the NFC with Romo leading Wade's Wonders to their
third straight win en route to what could be a preview in Dallas on
October 14th with New England to an Arizona Big Bowl trip early next
year.
There are many subjects to write
about but we are going to re-visit a subject we have reported on
many times during our years as a journalist.
We have written about research on the subject, how a cure of this
dread disease is long overdue. We have joined others in their "Race
For the Cure". We, like many others, lost a parent and sibling to
the incurable malady that continues to take it's toll. Many friends
were lost to this disease, and those losses hurt but things can
change....and do!
The regular mammogram was taken but this time it was different. The
letter arrived a few days later saying "we found something and need
to take a second look!" They took that second look and said "you
have a mass in your right breast and we need to do a biopsy." The
longtime family internist sends her to the specialist, the biopsy is
done and the "mass" is malignant.
`These are things we had written about concerning other people, not
someone close to our daily lives. Now you are listening as a
well-known breast surgeon is talking about the procedure to be done.
What it would entail, the pre-ops, who all will be involved,
scheduling, other doctors who will also be involved. Vastly
different than when it was just a subject of importance but it
concerned OTHER people, not someone this important to your life.
The first surgery came on August 7th.
Something three-centimeters in size was removed from her breast and
four lymph nodes were taken from her right side beneath her arm. Lab
reports showed the lymph nodes to be "benign" and the "malignant
mass" was removed. A re-entry into that same area on August 27th
made sure no further signs of the disease was visible.
We often hear or read "Up close and personal" in describing various
news stories or people in the news. This story has become as Up
Close and Personal as one can be in my life. My wife of
forty-four-years. I am happy to report her spirits are high, her
faith is strong, and her friends and prayer groups are numerous.
Joyce begins her radiation treatments this afternoon. With His
continued help, and surrounded by love she richly deserves, she will
beat that dread disease!
That's my time and I do thank you for yours!
