Katie Couric and Paula Zahn,
two of the best known television news
anchors in America were portrayed in most
uncomplimentary ways this week.
In a book released this week, an
unauthorized biography, Ed Klein, a longtime
reporter for the New York Times and
Newsweek, called Ms. Couric a "manipulative,
jealous, bullying diva!" Entitled Katie: The
Real Story, Klein's book says the longtime
perky-co-host of the Today Show and the
replacement for Dan Rather on the CBS-TV
Evening News, was on the verge of leaving
her husband, Jay Monahan, when he died of
cancer in 1998.
In reviewing Klein's book, The New York
Daily News said unnamed sources told Klein
that the couple had grown so far apart that
the "only thing that stood between Katie and
divorce was her fear of negative publicity."
Other unnamed sources said the TV-Star made
Monahan "feel as though he was not good
enough for her" and acted "as though she had
fallen out of love."
In the Crown Publishing book, Klein contends
Couric was so chillingly calculating that
cynics at NBC took bets on how long it would
take her to exploit Monahan's death.
"Some said 72-hours; others
just 24-hours," according to Klein.
When approached about this subject, Matthew
Hiltzik, a spokesman for Couric said: "The
baseless gossip about this subject doesn't
merit a response."
Ed Klein, who previously wrote the book "The
Truth About Hillary", paints a scathing
portrait of Couric as a one-dimensional
prima donna who would do anything to claw
her way to the top. One story Klein tells of
Couric destroying the marriage of a top CNN
Executive because he promised to make her a
star.
While on the Today Show, Klein reports that
Couric would intentionally eat into Matt
Lauer's airtime and that she was jealous of
Ann Curry, the news reader on the Today
Show.
Lauer threatened to quit
"Today" if NBC Executives renewed Couric's
65-Million-Dollar contract.
Because of falling ratings on the CBS-TV
Evening News since she became the anchor,
Klein says Couric has been forced to accept
diminished power, and less influence over
Editorial decisions. Certainly things have
gone down-hill since Bob Schieffer gave up
his interim position at that anchor desk
after Rather departed. Schieffer had CBS
ratings on the increase before Couric
arrived. Now the network is far behind NBC
and ABC's Charles Gibson is leading the race
displacing Brian Williams who was number one
for a long time.
While Couric was taking the hits from Ed
Klein, another well known female anchor was
the center of questioning actions, a
possible divorce and who knows how many
lawsuits over millions of dollars.
New York newspapers have been having a field
day with the Paula Zahn story. Until
recently a leading anchor at CNN, Ms. Zahn
told friends that she had a sexless marriage
to Richard Cohen which drove her into the
arms of another man.
A friend of the former CNN Anchor said the
fire went out of the 20-year marriage long
before Cohen learned of the affair last
August when he found his wife's "lurid" sex
diary.
Friends of Cohen tell a different
story--that Zahn betrayed him when she
"strayed" with his pal Paul Fribourg. "I
trusted Paul and I trusted Paula," Cohen
told a friend.
"I had no inkling there was a long-term
romance."
Cohen, reportedly discovered Ms. Zahn's
diary with his 17-year old daughter Haley.
The diary details Ms. Zahn's extra-marital
affair. Friends of Ms. Zahn contend that her
husband showed the diary to Haley and her
13-year old brother Jared. "It was
unnecessary and hurtful said another Zahn
friend.
Cohen claims he showed the
diary only to his 17-year old daughter. A
Cohen friend said "Richard does not want to
drag Paula's dirty laundry through a public
arena.
Last Friday, Zahn filed a 60-page suit in
Manhattan Supreme Court demanding a forensic
accounting of more than 25-million-dollars
which she had entrusted to Cohen.
Cohen, reportedly, refuses
to deal with issues of child custody and
visitation unless Zahn signs away her right
to an accounting. He won't budge. He is so
bitter.
Zahn and Cohen have been trying to live
together but recently he said he wanted her
out of the house. She has moved into a East
76th Street full-floor rental, for which she
is reportedly paying forty-thousand-dollars
a month.
The Diary in which Zahn reportedly went into
extensive intimate details about her
extra-marital affair with her husband's
friend is also reportedly to have included
numerous photos in which Zahn laid bare her
alleged affair.
Who knows how the Klein attack book on
Couric, or, Zahn's extra-marital affair
involving millions and three children, will
lead.
One thing seems certain...neither of these
well-known television celebrities need
another problem with their careers. Katie
Couric is just hanging on by a thread and
Paula Zahn is without a job at this time.
Stay tuned, these stories will be getting
more water-cooler talk before the end to
either is settled.
